Qui-Gon MO

A screen-accurate Jedi costume project

Qui-Gon MO is a fully developed, screen-accurate Qui-Gon Jinn costume, created as a formal submission project for the Rebel Legion, the official international Star Wars costuming community.

This project documents the complete journey — from research and material choice to construction, finishing, and final photography — meeting the accuracy, craftsmanship, and presentation standards required for Rebel Legion membership.

Becoming Qui-Gon Jinn

As a 1.96 m tall Jedi with a calm yet resolute presence, I have always felt a strong connection to Master Qui-Gon Jinn.

Unlike many who choose Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, or Obi-Wan Kenobi, I followed a less traveled path — the Jedi who first saw the Chosen One.

Qui-Gon embodies strength through intuition, defiance through compassion, and faith in the Living Force.

“Feel, don’t think. Trust your instincts.”

This project tells the story of how I became him — stitch by stitch.

About the character

Qui-Gon Jinn is a wise and independent Jedi Master, known for following the will of the Force even when it contradicts the Jedi Council.

Deeply spiritual and intuitive, he trusts his instincts and challenges rigid doctrine.

As Obi-Wan Kenobi’s mentor, he discovered Anakin Skywalker and believed him to be the Chosen One.

Qui-Gon’s compassion, quiet strength, and moral independence shaped the destiny of the galaxy.

Project intent

From the outset, this costume was developed with a clear goal:

to meet the screen accuracy and craftsmanship standards required for official Rebel Legion membership.

Every design decision was guided by:

  • film reference from The Phantom Menace
  • material authenticity
  • wearability and movement
  • a lived-in, believable Jedi appearance

This was not a casual cosplay build, but a qualification-level project.

Costume overview

Every element of the costume reflects patience, intention, and respect for the source material.

“The ability to speak does not make you intelligent.”

Below is a record of how Qui-Gon MO was built — one garment at a time.

Outer Tunic

Natural ecru linen, machine- and hand-sewn, tailored to match The Phantom Menace reference stills.

Medium weight, allowing free movement.

The pattern was sourced from Julie-Chantal and includes lining.

The fabric was dyed using a bucket-dyeing process with Assam tea.

Inner Tunic

Also made from natural ecru linen, machine- and hand-sewn.

Lightweight and breathable, tailored to screen references.

Tabards & Sash

Created using a linen-blend tricot (95% linen).

Purchased in white and dyed with Assam tea to achieve the correct tone and depth.

Belt & Lightsaber

Two key items complete the costume:

  • LightsaberQGJ Neopixel Lightsaber from NeoSabers, featuring a Xenopixel V3 core with movie-accurate design and sound.
  • BeltMaster Jedi Belt Deluxe Version (Brown) from MagMel Creations, crafted from genuine leather with screen-accurate detailing.

Both pieces significantly elevate the authenticity of the costume.

Boots

Faux leather boots sourced via Etsy.

Replacing these with real leather boots is one of the first planned future upgrades.

Props & accessories

Several of Qui-Gon Jinn’s iconic props were 3D-printed and finished for this project:

  • Aquata breather
  • Comlink
  • Holoprojector

Each piece was carefully painted and weathered to match the screen-used look.

The aquata breather shown represents version 1 — printed in PLA, hand-painted, and weathered for realism.

Process & craftsmanship

Creating a costume at this level takes time, experimentation, and quality materials.

What I value most about this project is the learning process and collaboration involved.

During this build I:

  • explored priming and weathering techniques for 3D prints
  • refreshed hand-sewing skills after nearly forty years
  • basted the robe pattern myself to better understand fit and proportions

Final assembly of certain elements was completed with professional support.

Hair & make-up

Due to age and a receding hairline, growing long hair was not a realistic long-term option.

A wig was sourced from a German seller and professionally styled and fitted in under an hour by make-up artist Petra Leurink.

Aging & future improvements

The costume still requires additional aging; at present it appears slightly too new.

However, the natural variation in the fabrics — particularly in the robe — already provides an authentic, dignified Jedi aesthetic.

Planned future improvements include:

  • further weathering
  • real leather boots
  • minor detailing refinements
